MAIN - Management of Intangibles – Discontinuous Innovation Approach (11/2012 - 10/2014)

MAIN is a Tekes funded two-year project. It is a continuation of a Discontinuous Innovation Project – Finland -research program that has been previously carried out in collaboration between IMI and Lappeenranta University of Technology. MAIN project belongs to the International Innovation Laboratory (ILab) -network which includes research partners from 11 countries.

RAPI - Rapid innovation practices (11/2012 - 10/2014)

RAPI – Rapid innovation practices project is financed by Tekes small strategic opening: Rapid development in innovation activities. RAPI is a joint project of three research group: Innovation Management Institute (IMI), Virtual and Mobile Work research unit (vmWork) and Integrated design and manufacturing (IDM)RAPI-project approaches the concept of innovation speed in a new way to produce an understanding of the nature and meaning of the speed for a organization.

UXUS - User Experience and Usability in Complex Systems (FIMECC UXUS) (01/2011 - 05/2015)

FIMECC UXUS (User Experience & Usability in Complex Systems) is a 5-year (2010-2015) FIMECC Ltd. (Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster) research program carried out in cooperation by 7 companies and 5 research institutes. FIMECC UXUS employs user experience- and design thinking to challenge current products, services, and organizational practices and cultures of Finnish metals and engineering industry to further its competitiveness.

BACI - Backstage Interaction for Effective Collaboration and Innovation (11/2013 - 10/2016)

BACI project is focused on examining the routinized practices of collaboration processes, and the ways in which they can limit the potential of the collaboration. Particularly, the project investigates the dynamic between the things that are made visible to the collaboration partner, and those that are left hidden in the backstage of the collaboration. The project is focused on studying innovative collaborations and aims to discover novel work methods and managerial practices for more effective and flexible collaboration processes.

RINE - Requirements for Innovative Environments (01/2011 - 12/2015)

RINE aims to find ways in which the structural and social arrangements of an organization can best support the innovation practice of its members. The project aims to remove unnecessary conflicts between the structures  of innovation management and the actual practice of organizational actors, and thus increase the effectiveness of managerial policies. The projcet is particuarly focused on the context of service innovation. RINE examines organizational actors in various roles and organizational levels.

RINES - Requirements for Innovative Environments – Structural Challenges (03/2010 - 02/2011)

RINES is a research project which aims at studying the ways in which the innovation management structures can best support the creation of innovative environments. RINES approaches innovation activity from the social practices point of view. This approach makes it possible to generate in-depth understanding of the central practices for the innovation activity. The project focuses on comparing the informal practices of innovation with the formal structures of innovation management and on reducing unnecessary conflicts between them. The results of the project support the effective utilization of innovation management structures and tools as well as improving of innovativeness in organizations.

Company innovation and R&D operations

BIFE - Balanced Innovation Front End (03/2006 - 12/2008)

The Balanced Innovation Front End (BIFE) -project studies the Front-End of the innovation process that preceds the actual product or service development. The Front-End is divided to strategic and operative levels, and the mechanisms supporting and linking these. Operative level activities include such elements as idea and concept generation and evaluation. Strategic level activities include activities such as roadmapping, generating business plans, portfolio decisions, resource allocation. The operative and strategic level are linked through control and sensemaking processes, and supported by an innovative work community.

BIOINNO - Business Competence and Innovation Activity in Bio- and Bio-oriented industries (01/2009 - 12/2010)

BIOINNO is a joint project between Helsinki University of Technology and University of Helsinki which studies and develops business competence and innovation activity in bio- and bio-oriented companies. The project will be realized in cooperation with Stanford University and Berlin University of Technology. The project started in the beginning of the year 2009 and will continue until the end of the year 2010. The total budget of the project is 920 000 Euros.

COINNO - Customer Oriented Innovation in Network Economy (01/2003 - 12/2005)

The goal of the COINNO –project is to study and develop customer oriented innovation processes in networked business environment. COINNO -project endeavors particularly to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of fuzzy-front-end –phase of innovation process. The research provides new context-specific information and understanding about different innovation environments and innovation processes.

DIP-FI II - Discontinuous Innovation Project DIP-FI II (05/2010 - 06/2012)

Discontinuous Innovation Project DIP-FI II is part of Discontinuous Innovation Project – Finland -research program that is carried out in collaboration between IMI and SC-Research at Lappeenranta University of Technology. The DIP-FI research process is structured around three stages: search, selection and implementation of discontinuous and radical innovations.

DIP-PRO - Discontinuous Innovation Project for Products (01/2008 - 12/2009)

DIP-PRO -project focuses on discontinuous product innovations. The term discontinuous refers to innovations beyond incremental product improvements that are typically aimed at new markets (new customer needs, customers or market segments) and/or, which apply new technologies from the point of view of development organization. The development typically requires acquiring new competences and skills in order to succeed. Discontinuous innovations may also require abandoning existing mental thinking models or working practices. Old structures must give room for new insights and ways of working. In addition, discontinuous innovations require different management approaches and development practices compared to incremental innovations.

EXI - EXtended Innovation EXI- Program (01/2003 - 06/2007)

Innovation Management Institute of Helsinki University of Technology has launched five years (2003-2007) Extended Innovation (EXI)–research program to research innovation management practices and innovation processes in organizations. The program consists of different scientific research projects focusing on studying specific research questions and topics as follows: customer oriented innovation, service innovation, networking in innovation and life-cycle in innovation.

IMNE - Innovation Management in Networked Economy (01/2004 - 12/2004)

IMNE is a cross-industry research of the strategic management of innovation activities in Finnish companies. The project aims to identify how management teams perceive the strategic role of innovation activities and to identify the dynamics of strategic management of innovation activities.

IPSI - An Integrative Perspective to Service Innovation (10/2006 - 09/2008)

An Integrative Perspective to Service Innovation (IPSI) is a theoretically oriented research project, focusing on service innovation. It extends the research conducted empirically in the Knowledge-Intensive Business Service Innovation and Innovation Networks (KIBSINET) project into the area of theoretical issues. The purpose of IPSI is to create grounds for such an approach that would take into consideration both the central role of the customer and the perspective of the service provider when modelling service innovation. First and foremost the project tries to reconcile the views of the theories of service marketing and service engineering, which usually have been developed apart from each other within different schools. This integrative view is supplemented with ideas from other relevant service theories. The project is divided into three parts explained in detail below. The first step is to explore the existing service models and develop them further into a model suitable for innovation analysis. The second step is to define service innovations as outcomes, and examine their dimensions and classifications. The third step is to analyse the different processes which can lead to innovations in services.

ISO - Innovation Integrated in Service Operations (10/2007 - 09/2010)

The ISO project (Innovation Integrated in Service Operations) examines and compares innovation activities in three types of services: customer services (retail and insurance sectors), industrial services and knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS).

KIBSINET - Development of Knowledge Intensive Business Service Innovations and Innovation Networks (10/2004 - 09/2007)

The KIBSINET 2004 - 2007 researches and develops the innovation activities of knowledge intensive business service firms (KIBS) and the innovation networks in which KIBS firms are involved. The project focuses on the Finnish real estate and construction cluster, examining those KIBS firms that are involved in the cluster as well as the innovation networks in the cluster. KIBSINET project is based on the results of KILPA 2003 pre-study, which explored the current state of service innovation activities in the Finnish real estate and construction cluster. The project consists of two closely interconnected focus areas: KIBSI focuses on innovation activities within KIBS organizations and INET examines the innovation networks in the real estate and construction cluster.

KILPA - The Development of Service Innovations in Real Estate Business (04/2003 - 06/2004)

The aim of KILPA project is to develop preliminary definitions for developing innovation activities and customer orientation in real estate business by diagnosing current innovation activities and searching best-practises from real estate cluster, other industries and literature. The research results are based on data collected from service providers, facility owners and user organisations in the Finnish real estate business.

National innovation systems

LIS - Local Innovation Systems - Project (12/2001 - 12/2004)

The Local Innovation System –project investigates the behaviour of local innovation systems. The research approach is to undertake comparative studies of the conditions of innovation in United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Finland. The aim of the project is to understand the dynamics of innovation in local settings where one or more industries or technologies are particularly strong.
